There is a range of material available, including examples of candidate evidence with commentaries, as part of our Understanding Standards programme. This material is for teachers and lecturers to help them develop their understanding of the standards required for assessment. As new material is developed we will publish this information in our weekly Centre News. All material available can be found in the following locations:

Broad General Education

General statements

In S1-2 pupil learn about and from a variety of religions. S1 focuses on Islam and Judaism as well as a Philosophy topic thinking about Death, Funerals and Afterlife. In S2 we use India as a theme and investigate Hinduism and Buddhism, as well as a research topic on a third religion.

Skills development

Literacy skills are developed in every lesson, pupils are always encouraged to add depth and detail where relevant.

Numeracy skills are developed through graphs and statistics and each topic has a clear perspective on the pupils own Health andWell Being.


  • explore values such as justice and compassion
  • investigate religious diversity, looking at similarities and differences
  • develop their own beliefs, attitudes and values, such as Critical thinking – is this a good and why?

How is this done? Pupils:

  • Learn new information by reading, watching and listening.
  • Show what they have learned by building, writing, drawing, designing, discussing and presenting their own ideas. See examples below.

In S3 all pupils undertake the RME Award. This open ended qualification allows maximum freedom of choice for every pupil, although support is available for those who need it. It allows them to choose their own topic, approach to research, method of presentation, and even level of work. Some pupils are already achieving the Award at Level 6 – the equivalent of one piece of work at Higher level. Topics have ranged from teenage issues such as self-harm and depression to global issues such as nuclear power, pollution and terrorism. The Award also requires them to think about a practical action that will benefit others. We have had baking sales, sponsored walks, talks to PSE classes, creative, thoughtful displays and pupils going to the Primary school to lead a sports event.

The Award is excellent preparation for the Senior Phase.

In every class at every stage, pupils are encouraged to show their own skills and flair in order to develop their own understanding.



General statements

In the Senior Phase, RME becomes RMPS – Religious, Moral and Philosophical Studies.

Courses delivered

National 3, National 4 and National 5 RMPS are designed to be delivered in one class. Pupils investigate:

  • World Religion: Christianity. Pupils will investigate key beliefs, practices and sources.
  • Morality and Belief: Religion and Relationships. Pupils will investigate marriage, gender, family and sexuality as well as contemporary viewpoints.
  • Religious and Philosophical Questions: Miracles. Pupils will investigate the issue of miracles, religious examples and scientific explanations.


Higher RMPS allows pupils the opportunity to stretch their knowledge and skills to a much deeper level. Pupils investigate:

  • World Religion: Buddhism. Pupils will develop in-depth factual and abstract knowledge of Buddhism, and the lives of Buddhists.
  • Morality and Belief: Religion, Medicine and the Human Body. Pupils will investigate embryo use, organ donation and end of life issues, always reflecting on the ethical concerns
  • Religious and Philosophical Questions: The Origins of Life. Pupils will develop skills to critically analyse religious and philosophical questions such as faith, reason, creation and the scientific theories of the Big Bang and Evolution.


All of these courses require pupils to pass 3 internal assessments and at National 4 there is an Added Value Project. At National 5 and Higher there is an Assignment and Final Exam.

These qualifications carry the same number of SCQF points as any subject at the same level and are particularly relevant to careers where people skills are essential; such as social care, human resources, youth work, health care, psychology, medicine, law, teaching and the civil service.
